1974
From classroom knots to whale sharks - the story of sub-aqua at Trinity

It started with a chance phone call from Alleyn’s School asking to borrow equipment. It ended with diving with 12 metre whale sharks in the South Atlantic. In 1974, Fraser Macdonald, dispirited by teaching dry theory to Navy cadets, realised the potential of the school's new 3-metre deep pool. With help from Peter Coy, he founded the Trinity Sub Aqua Club.

What began with home-made wetsuits glued together from neoprene sheets grew into a fully operational diving club with its own boat and compressor. Over 30 years, the club took students on expeditions from the wrecks of Cornwall to the caves of Malta (famous for James Bond) and RAF bases, qualifying generations of divers before they even left school.
