Shaw Building opened (Sports Halls, Squash Courts, CDT)

The new Shaw Building—a centre for visual arts, design technology, and indoor sports—was officially opened in the Summer term following speeches by Big Sir Lovelock, Headmaster Dennis Whitgift, Mr. Silk (President of MCC), and the School Captain. The building, named in honour of former Governor Peter Shaw, was praised by guests for its sheer scale, extensive use of natural light, and sophisticated facilities, which include spacious art studios, CDT workshops, darkrooms, and a magnificent indoor sports centre with two halls and squash courts. The Mayor called the building "absolutely fantastic," believing it would provide an even better preparation for the outside world, while Mr. Dennis Silk was "staggered" by the variety of activities housed under one roof. The architect was particularly pleased with the "Magic Corridor link" and the "degree of freshness" achieved. The report concludes that the building is already being used to its full potential, fulfilling the educational philosophy of supporting all aspects of a developing young person to ensure their confidence and breadth of achievement in adult life.
