The Marshall Quadrangle

Following the re-naming of the Societies Room after Dr. Sandison, former Chairman of the Foundation's Schools Committee, the central quadrangle-garden was formally named The Marshall Quadrangle' after Sir James Marshall, former Chairman of the Court of Governors itself. Happily Sir James was able to attend the School for a brief ceremony.

For the quadrangle naming ceremony the ducks were fortunately lying low so that the proceedings were not interrupted by any irreverent quackings. It was a pregnant silence, however, for within days a female mallard and a brood of ducklings had claimed maritime rights over the pond. Ecological experts have informed Mr. O'Brien — deputed to catch them and take them to wider deeps — that the best way to lure them is as follows: place a stout carton on its side, put food in it; the ducks will all waddle dutifully in, at which point the stout carton is quickly flipped on top of them. The instructions get a bit vague after that, but the essence of the thing seems to be patience and an infinite reliance on the stupidity of ducks. Since the transporting boxes have pictures of grinning cats on the outside, however, he may have a long wait.
