1984
Jack Griffin retires

Jack was Head of Junior school, was a good cricketer and coached the 1st XI at North End as well as organising the staff cricket team.

Deadly with a piece of chalk and forever associated with Room 2 at Shirley Park. As one ex-pupil wrote,

‘To Jack, I owe an understanding of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs and I can still see him in front of the blackboard, chalk in hand, bracketing the subordinate clauses. A moment later, that same chalk became a heat seeking missile, launched with deadly aim at the less attentive.’

After his retirement we found out he was part of the British Expeditionary Force, the survivors struggling back from Southern Belgium in 1940 to gather at Dunkirk. A quite remarkable life and a quite remarkable man.

How can you even begin to sum up a character like Jack Griffin and the influence he had on so many students at Trinity. We can start by sharing his valete, a pre-retirement interview and how he was remembered in his obituary.
